Emodiversity
Emodiversity is the variety and relative balance of emotions people experience in daily life—much like biodiversity describes the mix of species in an ecosystem. It can be measured with one-time or repeated emotion questionnaires by looking at how many emotions occur, how often, and how evenly they’re distributed.
Emotional variety is common: in a study tracking real-time emotions of 10,000+ people, individuals report feeling multiple emotions in the same moment more than half the time, and about one third of moments involved mixed positive and negative emotions.
Emodiversity has been linked to wellbeing, health markers, coping, and social and work functioning, and may reflect richer emotional information, flexibility, and resilience.
